How the Gold-Gilded Crosses of Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon Were Crafted

The gold-gilded crosses atop Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon are more than religious symbols. They represent a harmony of architectural heritage, restoration expertise, and refined craftsmanship. After more than a century standing above the cathedral, the original crosses were removed during the restoration process due to serious deterioration. Their metal structure had suffered from rust and corrosion, while many decorative details were bent, damaged, or no longer suitable for restoration. As a result, a new pair of crosses was commissioned to preserve the spirit and silhouette of the historic originals. The restoration process began with careful research into archival materials, historical drawings, and visual references related to the cathedral’s original design. Since the old technical drawings were no longer complete, specialists combined international references with 3D scanning technology to recreate the form of the crosses based on the design from more than 130 years ago. Once the model was completed, the new crosses were cast from specialized high-strength steel. This material provides a durable foundation, allowing the structure to withstand harsh outdoor conditions, especially at a height of more than 60 meters above the ground. The most remarkable stage of the process was the gold gilding. Carefully selected 24K gold leaf was chosen to suit the tropical climate, with the ability to endure sunlight, rain, and time while maintaining its radiant appearance. Before the gilding process, the surface of each cross was cleaned, treated, and coated with a specialized adhesive layer. Each ultra-thin sheet of gold leaf was then carefully applied with dedicated tools, fixed using soft brushes, and finished with refined polishing techniques. This step required exceptional precision. Even a slight movement could wrinkle or damage the delicate gold leaf, affecting the final surface quality. For this reason, the gilding process was carried out in a strictly controlled environment, minimizing dust and contact to ensure the highest level of finishing. Each completed cross measures approximately 3.73 meters in height, 1.85 meters in width, and weighs around 400 kilograms. The design retains the spirit of the original, with rounded upper ends, floral-inspired forms, and decorative details that reflect the elegance of classical Catholic architecture. Once installed atop the zinc spires, the base of each cross was firmly secured with a specialized bolt system to ensure safety and long-term durability. In addition to the crosses, the gold-gilded lily details were also restored according to the original design. The lily symbolizes purity, light, and resurrection, adding solemn beauty and spiritual depth to the architectural composition. The creation and installation of the two new crosses mark an important milestone in the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon. Beyond architectural renewal, the project preserves a cultural, spiritual, and artistic legacy that has endured for generations.
